Levels of progesterone rise after ovulation each month in preparation for potential pregnancy- the hormone helps to maintain the lining of the womb, amongst other things. If the egg released goes unfertilised, progesterone levels start to drop again about a week after ovulation, and continue to fall until menstruation begins, about a week after that.
So it's all thanks to this rise and fall of hormones. Cause and reaction.
