CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) has helped me manage my PMDD dramatically. I now know my triggers and can identify them before they actually hit me full force and it's too late. I received priceless information on coping mechanisms and gathered greater understanding about what was happening to me physically, chemically and emotionally.
I hear you!
I know group therapy can seem extremely daunting for the best of us and it was something I said I would never do but when it really gets to the point when PMDD is crippling almost everything about you, you will try just about anything.
First and foremost I would like to say a massive thank you to the group organiser. (You know who you are) The materials she provided were second to non and I still use the taught techniques daily. Her demeanor couldn't have been better placed and even the tone of her voice was therapeutic. Hopefully, if you enrolled on to a CBT course yours would be as beneficial.
Secondly, what an amazing group of people. This is what I was most worried about....telling my problems to strangers, what would they think of me. Would they think I was a raving lunatic that I should be locked up or would they call me a liar and say- it's only a period!?? I had even less time to hear about their problems. After all I was trying to fix me not all and sundry. This was as far from my expectations as it could get. Those strangers are now my closest friends, the compassion and acceptance that filled the room for those two hours every Thursday really was out of this world. It was the highlight of my weeks and I have never experienced anything like it. I know I'm not alone!
So I know it's a cliche but really...don't knock it until you have tried it.
